18 October 2011, Rome - Deputy Mayor of Rome Sveva Belviso at the unveiling ceremony of a monument celebrating the eradication of rinderpest, a lethal animal disease that for centuries has wiped out herds of cattle, buffalo and related livestock species as well as wild ruminants. Italy has contributed more than USD 6 million towards the elimination of rinderpest in Central Asian countries as well as continuing its support of the Global Framework for Progressive Control of Trans-boundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADS). The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) partnered with FAO in this endeavor. This marks the second time in human history that a disease has been eliminated (second to the elimination of the human smallpox virus). Square in front of the Ministry of Health (EUR).
