Background information
It is vital that livestock keepers continue feeding their livestock during winter, to keep them healthy to produce milk and other dairy products. However, due to the ongoing drought and other challenges such as unemployment, soaring prices and the overall economic turmoil, many herders are not able to afford animal feed. With support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), FAO is assisting some of the most vulnerable herders in Badakhshan province ahead of the harsh winter months. Each herding family receives 200 kg of animal feed, medicine for animals and technical training on livestock management to maximize the impact of the assistance. This assistance is expected to maintain steady production of dairy products during winter and increase each household?income by up to USD 35 per week through the sale of milk and yoghurt. Under ADB?support, a total of 20 587 people in the remote northeastern province will benefit from more than 5.8 tonnes of concentrated animal feed assistance in 2022.
