This project started in 1987 with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as executing agency, financed through the UN Development Programme and is a strategic part of the government's master plan for fisheries development. Its main objectives are to increase local technical manpower for the fishing fleet, with practical training as a basic feature, together with the improved quality of fish products for the internal and external markets and, in specific cases, technical support to the Government's fisheries institutions. The most important results of these improvements will be an increase of the overall economical efficiency of the fishing sector and an increase in the value of export products due to quality improvement. There will also be an improved supply of fish products of higher quality and greater variety for consumption by the people of Mozambique.
