A mobile veterinary clinic service brings improvements to the health of rural dairy animals belonging to small scale farmers. The Government, recognising the importance of a reliable public supply of wholesome milk at a reasonable price, established rural dairy cooperatives under the Eastern Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Ltd., EMPCUL. With technical assistance from FAO and financial aid from Denmark, four dairy plants have been set up in rural areas for the collection and quality control of milk. A central plant in Dhaka now pasteurizes, packs and markets about 22,000 litres of fresh milk daily. The Cooperative provides mobile veterinary services, and the middleman, whose dealings benefit neither producer nor consumer, has virtually been eliminated. Thus EMPCUL strengthens important socio-economic links between farmers and consumers, and contributes to rural development.
