The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is assisting India's Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture at Kausalyagang (near Bhubaneswar) with several projects to advance inland fisheries research and to establish a lead centre for a network of aquaculture centres in Asia. Project goals seek to make aquaculture the mainstay for the future development of inland fisheries in India, which has about 1.6 million ha of freshwater and 2 million ha of brackish water. FAO is helping the Institute with equipment, consultants and international training programmes. Institute extension activities, including farm-science and trainer's training centres, and a lab-to-land programme, are demonstrating to farmers and fisheries functionaries the latest technologies in household and community-pond management, fish-farming industries and related extra income schemes.
