Afghanistan, June 1952 - This photograph shows the Kohtal I-Shatu Pass traverses by the FAO rinderpest team. For the last two years the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has led a vigorous campaign against rinderpest in Afghanistan. FAO expert Dr. Eric Pierson spent the Summer of 1951 inoculating cattle and manufacturing serum under the most primitive circumstances. The programme succeeded in stopping the potential epidemic.
