Because of the lack of adequate trails or tracks, the inhabitants of the hilly area north of the Lumbini zone must transport goods in baskets carried on their shoulders, as this little girl is doing while pausing along the 65-km footpath linking Tansen to Tamghas which is being widened into a jeep track. - - Self-Help Work in the Hills of Nepal. Self-Help Work in the Hills of Nepal The UN/FAO World Food Programme (WFP) is currently assisting Nepal, one of the Least Developed Countries lying landlocked between India and Tibet, with about $40 million worth of food aid. One WFP project, costing about $3.5 million, involves the distribution of 6,900 tonnes of wheat or maize, 480 tonnes of dried skim milk, 360 tonnes of edible oil and 480 tonnes of pulses as an incentive to volunteer workers who are providing 2,400,000 man-days of labour for the construction of 500 km of mule trails and jeep tracks over a period of five years. Begun in 1977, the project is being executed by the Local Development Department of the Ministry of Home and Panchayat. Its aim is to relieve the inhabitants' isolation and their difficult living conditions. The unskilled workers are engaged in construction of three mule trails and one jeep track linking their community with the adjoining one. Each volunteer gets five rations for each day worked.
