Close-up of an edible land crab on the Langue de Barbarie, a long sand spit between the Senegal River and the Atlantic Ocean near Saint-Louis. This crab is of the Gecarcinidae family, probably the species Gecarcinus weilerie, know in the vernacular as lagoon land crab (Fr. Tourlourou des lagunes). Such crabs are caught for private consumption or sold in local markets and eaten throughout West Africa from Cape Verde and Senegal to Angola, including the islands in the Gulf of Guinea. Maximum size of the crab's carapace is 12 cm wide by 9.5 long. - - General: General.
