DEVELOPMENT OF INSHORE ARTISAN FISHING, Senegal, 1977 - During fishing operations, the purse seine is used to encircle the fish. The aims of this FAO project are to build up fisheries development centres in four important artisan fisheries locations: St. Louis, Joal, Foundiougne and Ziguinchor. The objectives are to collect and analyse statistical data on fisheries and also the biological data necessary to evaluate and survey the main stocks of fish exploited by artisan fisheries along the Senegalese coast. Moreover, demonstrations of the purse seine net and other fishing gear are being given to fishermen using various types of marine vessels.
