Bhutan is a landlocked country situated in the northeastern Himalayas between the Tibetan plateau and the Assam-Bengal plains of northeastern India. Ninety percent of the work force of the country's 1.3 million people is engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. Illiteracy is very high, making for a dire shortage of technicians and administrators. Bhutan received assistance from several UN agencies and in 1976 the UN/FAO World Food Programme (WFP) started a USD 1.4 million four-year project for nutritional improvement of school children. In 1980 it was followed by a similar USD 5.8 three-year school-feeding project, which provides soy-fortified bulgur wheat, dried skimmed milk, vegetable oil, dried fish and iodized salt. Both increasing enrolment in primary schools in rural areas and a reduction in dropouts have resulted. About 50% of schools provide board facilities for students whose homes are far away. Current total WFP assistance to Bhutan amounts to USD 11.07 million with six food aid projects.
