EL SALVADOR, 1986 - EMERGENCY
On 10 October 1986 an earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter Scale
struck El Salvador causing loss of life and vast material 'damage. An
estimated 30,000 families were left homeless or suffered sever damage
to their homes. Immediately the World Food Programme (WFP.) of the United
Nations Representative in El Salvador visited the President and placed
at the disposal of the Government WFP food supplies for distribution on an
emergency basis. WFP continues to help earthquake victims under three
existing development projects for community development, and the construction
and maintenance of housing.
