Foresters at a meeting to discuss existing documentation and establish a forestry plan. - - Practical Training in Management of Natural Forests in the Sahel: TCP/RAF/6660. In the Sahelian countries, fuelwood is the only source of energy for most households in both rural and urban areas. In recent years, the growing demand has led to an alarming degradation of the forest cover and an increasingly acute shortage of wood. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through its Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP), is assisting the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), with a training programme in natural forest management. Expected results include the formulation and execution of forest policies to develop natural forest formations; more active and direct participation by the people in the creation and management of their own forest resources; the stabilization of Sahelian ecosystems; a regular supply of forest products for the people.
