This project is part of the Government of Mali's strategic plan for food self-sufficiency. It is jointly funded by Mali and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and executed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It aims at establishing the basic structures for a national plant protection service within the Ministry of Agriculture; using the principles of integrated pest control to develop prevention and control strategies and to disseminate crop protection methods to the rural population; training 200 000 rural people living in 1 000 pilot villages; and preparing plans and regulations for the control of pesticides and the import and export of plant material.
