MOTHER- OF- PEARL INDUSTRY IN THE SUDAN.Donganab Bay, Sudan, March 1962 - The Bay is the centre of a new mother-of- pearl industry initiated with the help of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to provide a new source of income for the coastal Hadendowa people, as an alternative to the seasonal fishing industry. As a result of the cultivation of mother-of-pearl shells, a new. button factory has been opened in Port Sudan.
