As part of its programme of agrarian reform, the government of Honduras has distributed land to farmers and encouraged them to form cooperatives to develop it. The Inter-American Development Bank, the UNDP, FAO, and other agencies have been involved as well, but the primary national assistance comes from the Instituto Nacional Agrario. Machinery has been given, loans backed, expertise provided to assist these cooperatives to begin activities like banana production and marketing, pig and chicken raising, and lumbering. Farmers, working together, have opened new areas of the country to development.
