With the building of the Aswan High Dam, an area of about 973,000 feddans (409,000 hectares), formerly dependent on the annual Nile floods for irrigation, is now to be cultivated under a system of perennial irrigation, based mainly on lifting water. This involves the construction of adequate main canals, distribution and branch canals, water supply installations and a drainage system.
