Peruvian mother and child in the Sierra region of the Andes. - - Vulnerable Group Feeding. The project supported by the UN/FAO World Food Programme (WFP) is providing food assistance worth just over US$13 million for a three year period for needy mothers and children of Peru. The food is being distributed throughout hospitals and health centres in the poorer districts of Lima and in depressed rural areas of the Sierra, the high mountain region of the Andes. Peru's high birth rate (22% of the total population is under six years of age), combined with the fact that 70% of the children under six suffer from malnutrition, makes the problem of improving nutrition standards extremely urgent.
