Philippines, August 1961 - SCPP laboratory technicians are seen here experimenting on the potency of a new molluscicide prepared in their chemical department.
The Government of the Philippines, duly alarmed at the great number of schistosomiasis victims among its citizens, established the Schistosomiasis Control Pilot Project (SCPP) in Palo, Leyte in 1953 and requested the assistance from several UN Specialized Agencies. WHO provided the services of an epidemiologist, a sanitary engineer, a malacologist, and a snail expert. UNICEF donated jeeps, supplies and other equipment. UNTAB gave funds for research work and an FAO agricultural engineer is also cooperating.
