Land reform, one of the keys to agricultural and social growth, is being carried out in Ecuador by the Institute for Agrarian Reform (IERAC) with assistance from the UN Development Program (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
Two experimental farms in the Andes which are run as cooperatives foe settlers are Hacienda San Vicente de Pusir and Hacienda Pesillo. San Vicente covers 10,000 hectares and has 300 families of former "huasipunguero", landless peasants. There are 228 families at Pesillo. The settlers are assisted by FAO and IERAC experts who live on the farms. They are also provided with machinery, fertilizer and insecticides. Gradually, as the land is developed, the peasants gain title to it.
