Bhutan, one of the Least Developed Countries, its situated in the north-eastern Himalayas between the Tibetan plateau and the Assam-Bengal plains of north-eastern India. 98% of its 1.25 million people are engaged in farming and forest-based activities in barely accessible valleys and plateaux; 90% of the people are illiterate. The UN/FAO World Food Programme (WFP) has provided Bhutan with $13 million in food aid since assistance began in 1976. WFP is currently assisting Bhutan with over $9.4 million worth of food aid. Projects include: the feeding of primary and secondary school students and teacher trainees, with WFP providing 7,490 tonnes of commodities valued at $5.7 million; the feeding of infants, expectant and nursing mothers and hospital patients with WFP food aid of about $1.3 million; the construction of mule tracks ($1.7 million) and the resettlement of 635 rural families from hardship areas in central Bhutan to the southern zone with WFP food aid of over $0.8 million.
