San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1969 - On Thursday before Easter some 120 young people participated in a hunger fast for 30 hours starting at noon, in the Plaza de Colon. Seminars and debates were held, led by youth leaders, university professors and priests. On Good Friday the fasters marched round the old town of San Juan with banners, "We are fasting with three-quarters of the world", and were joined by other citizens so that they were 500 strong when they returned to Plaza de Colon. They issued a Manifesto calling for the "creation of a just social order in which the spectre of hunger is banished for ever". Pictured: The march on Good Friday.
