The 1ivestock market at New Ha1fa. - - General: General. The first project to be put into operation by the UN/FAO Wor1d Food Programme (WFP project 001) at its inception in 1963 was the supp1y of food rations to some 42,000 Nubian farmers whose homes at Wadi Halfa (Northern Sudan) were threatened by the waters of the 500 km. reservoir created by the Aswan high dam. The Nubians were moved some 1,300 km. southeast and resett1ed in a new town near Khashm El Girba ca11ed New Halfa. WFP rations he1ped to tide the sett1ers over during the difficu1t period of rehabi1itation whi1e waiting for their new crops to grow. Ten years 1ater, New Halfa is now well estab1ished and is no longer dependent on the origina1 WFP aid.
