Tomatoes are being successfully grown in Malta by using the trough system, first introduced in Gurnsey eight years ago. Tomatoes are grown in only six inches of sterilized soil mixed with peat. This system over-comes the problem of the shortage of good soil in Malta for glasshouse crops. - - Horticultural demonstration and training centre.. The United Nations Development Programme ? Special Fund (UNDP-SF), with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as executing agency, is assisting the Government of Malta in establishing a Horticultural Demonstration and Training Centre. Overseas fellowships worth $35,000 have been granted by UNDP-SF. The 5-years project is being financed by $711,200 from UNDP-SF and a $568,000 Government contribution in kind.
