Vineyard workers in the Kog-Ikaman Valley vigorously dig deeper around their vines so that the soil will hold water longer and produce more and better grapes. - - Swedish Financed Project. The project is designed to help Afghanistan set up agricultural cooperatives and to assist the development of the Koh-I-Daman Valley some 20 miles north of the capital, Kabul. FAO is providing technical assistance to the Swedish International Development Agency project which is called: Programme on Agricultural Credit and Cooperatives in Afghanistan (PACCA). Through the formation of Cooperative Societies, farmers are learning the use of fertilizer and pesticides, improved seeds, multiple cropping and up-to-date marketing practices. The PACCA project is bringing better crops and higher profits to the Kod-I Daman Valley farmers, many of whom were previously at the mercy of money-lenders and continually in debt. It is hoped that the example of the Kog-Ikaman Valley project will eventually be taken up by the rest o the country where agricultural practices have changed little since the days of Darius, Alexander the Great and Ghengis Khan.
