The UN/FAO World Food Programme (WFP) is assisting the Repub1ic of Togo with food aid for volunteer rural workers taking part in rural and agricu1tura1 deve1opment projects. These include the bui1ding of schools, dispensaries and other buildings; laying and maintenance of roads and tracks; construction of wells, small dams and bridges, sanitary facilities and other infrastructures. They also include tree planting, agricultura1 1and development, and various assistance services, such as pre-school feeding and training of rural workers. The volunteers receive free food rations, consisting of maize, maize meal, canned meat and fish, and edib1e oi1, for each day's work. Thousands of people have taken part in the self-he1p activities since WFP aid to Togo began in 1968. The aid programme is scheduled to continue unti1 September 1980.
