WFP FLOOD CONTROL. Republic of Korea, December 1968.
The purpose of this World Food Programme /Food and Agriculture Organization (WFP/FAO) project is to aid the Korean Government in flood control works that will protect households and farmlands from floods and increase the cultivated land areas. The work is beiing done in five flood control sites included in the Government's 1967-71 five-year development plan by unemployed or under-employed labour. Labourers will receive food aid for themselves and their dependents, at a total cost to WFP of $705,000 over a period of two-and-a-half years in part-payment of wages. The present project follows two similar ones to which WFP contributed a total of $1,727,000 in food aid. The former was successfully completed in 1966 and resulted in 4,400 meters of construction to protect 300 hectares of land and 350 households.
Both men and women Korean workers help in construction of Gongjee Cheon dam.
