Within the context of the government's general plan for rural development which began in April 1971, World Food Programme (WFP) has been giving food aid to encourage pre-cooperative groups, community self-help works, training of women traders, literacy, etc. as well as training of personnel for the cooperatives, forestry and agricultural development. Total WFP assistance to the various sub-projects amounts to USD 10.8 million.
