Agriculture contributes about 9% of the GNP and provides work for about 25% of the economically active population. The principal agricultural products are meat, milk, food grains and coffee. Meat slaughtering, processing and refrigeration are carried out mostly for home consumption with a small surplus for export. About 80% of agricultural output is produced on large land-holdings or 'hacuendas' However, agrarian legislation, adopted in 1960, assures small farmers of their property rights and the reform measures include the resettlement and housing of needy rural families in agricultural units.
