Agriculture, forestry and fisheries account for roughly one half of India's gross domestic product and a source of livelihood of four-fifths of the entire population. Indian agriculture is still largely traditional; it is dependent on the vagaries of the weather, and the land under cultivation is extremely unevenly distributed. Despite this, through Government efforts and the work of such organisations as FAO, agricultural advancements have been made, particularly in the production of high yielding varieties of such food grains as rice and wheat.
