Workers at the project nursery sorting eucalyptus seedlings. These fast-growing trees are used extensively in project areas. - - Conservation of Natural Resources: GCP/NIC/019/NET. This agro-forestry project, with emphasis on reforestation and community development, is financed through the Government of the Netherlands and executed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The project has helped to establish the Woodcutter's Association in Leon. Through the Association, the project plants fast growing trees, including eucalyptus and leucaena, which will be harvested in place of rapidly vanishing forests. Some of the trees are planted on land owned by members; in the cases where members do not own land, the project has leased land for tree planting over a 15-year period. Through the Association, the project trains rural farmers in soil management and erosion control.
