04 November 2016, Lavumisa Swaziland - Mathendeni area in Msuzaneni. A local villager Bongani Sihlongonyane draws water for domestic use at the community's only water source. Due to long distances between the water source and the homesteads, donkeys have come in handy as they are now used to ferry water containers. FAO and the Government of Swaziland, with financial support from the European Union drilled a solar-powered model borehole to provide water for both livestock and humans at Mathendeni, one of the arid areas in Lavumisa, south of Swaziland. This is a in direct response to the adverse effects of the El Niño induced drought, FAO has triggered several interventions across southern Africa that are also riding on existing programmes following last season's reduced production.
