04 November 2016, Lavumisa Swaziland - Mathendeni area in Msuzaneni. The Great Usuthu River, Swaziland's largest natural stream is quickly running dry. FAO and the Government of Swaziland, with financial support from the European Union drilled a solar-powered model borehole to provide water for both livestock and humans at Mathendeni, one of the arid areas in Lavumisa, south of Swaziland. This is a in direct response to the adverse effects of the El Niño induced drought, FAO has triggered several interventions across southern Africa that are also riding on existing programmes following last season's reduced production.
