13 October 2005, Landhoo, Maldives - FAO and Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Marine Resources of the Maldives employees arriving to help distribute manure, seed, guava seedlings and tools donated through coordinated efforts of FAO and the Government of the Maldives. FAO Project OSRO/MDV/503/JPN: Assistance for affected rural communities in Maldives (- TSU - MDV-05/ER/I02). The long-term objective of this emergency project is to assist the Government of Maldives, especially the Agricultural Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources, in its efforts to rapidly re-establish sustainable income-generating agriculture activities destroyed by the tsunami, thereby enabling the poor and vulnerable islanders to rehabilitate their income opportunities and respond to the first needs required to achieve food security.
