14 June 1973, Upper Volta, Africa - Drought in Upper Volta. Bags of sorghur donated to UN/FAO World Food Programme by U.S.A are being carted away from a warehouse in the town of Kaya in Central Upper Volta. Five years of subnormal rainfall has brought severe drought and tragedy to Upper Volta, one of the six affected countries of the Sahelian Zone along the southern edge of the Sahara. The others are Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Mali and Chad.
