Background information
Livestock are not only threatened by external parasites but also by internal parasites. To protect livestock against internal parasites such as lungworms and gastrointestinal roundworms, it is very important to deworm animals using anthelmintic drugs or de-wormers. De-worming livestock contributes to increased weight gains and milk production as well as breeding efficiency. It also reduces pasture contamination and improves the immunity of the livestock.FAO de-wormed 45 695 animals including cattle, sheep and goats of 9 301 households in Afghanistan?eastern Nangarhar province, while providing each household with 200 kg of concentrated animal feed. FAO also provided 5 kg of fodder crop seed (Alfalfa) to livestock owners in the province to improve availability of animal feed during winter and spring.
