23 May 2017, Kok South Sudan - Members of the local community in Kok Island, South Sudan, walk to welcome of the Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), David Beasley, and the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, José Graziano da Silva. The visit is part of the two-day joint mission of WFP and WFP directors in South Sudan to assess the humanitarian situation in the country. Kok Island is a pre-crisis settlement within Leer County, former Unity State. It is known to become an island on a seasonal basis as water levels rise with the onset of the rainy season. Kok, populated by 100 households, recorded soaring levels of malnutrition and food insecurity. The population are mainly relying on wild fruits and water lilies. While, fish are available, they have no means to catch them. Global acute malnutrition rates are approaching emergency levels. As part of its emergency livelihood support programme, FAO provides fishing equipment (twine, hooks) and vegetable seeds and WFP conducts regular food distributions.
