23 May 2017, Rumbek, South Sudan - (Right to left) The Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), David Beasley, and the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, José Graziano da Silva, greet a community leader in Rumbek, Lakes states, South Sudan. The visit is part of the two-day joint mission of WFP and WFP directors in South Sudan to assess the humanitarian situation in the country.
During the visit, FAO officially opened a milk bar for the community to improve the quality of the milk processed and to provide marketing opportunities and processors within the Lakes State and beyond. The milk bar will be run by a women's association. The latest food security analysis exercise indicates that Rumbek is experiencing Crisis (IPC Phase 3) food insecurity, that is mainly driven by the exhaustion of cereal stocks at household level; reduced availability of livestock products due to seasonal migration of livestock in search of water and pasture; prolonged economic crisis; high food prices because of hyper-inflation; limited employment opportunities; and non-payment of salaries to civil servants.
