26 November 2010, Meru - FAO Global Rinderpest Eradication Programme Officer Felix Njeumi giving an interview at the Meru National Park where the last known outbreak of rinderpest amongst the local buffalo population was recorded almost a decade ago. Rinderpest, a disease afflicting mainly cloven-hooved animals, is only the second disease to be successfully wiped out globally, after smallpox, through human efforts. It is seen as a significant step in the fight against poverty and hunger, especially in communities that depend on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods.
