Background information
The National Command of the Coast Guard controls all fishing activities along the national and international coasts and carries out periodic inspections to ensure that the vessels are properly licensed, that the on-board equipment complies with all regulations and that the fish is adequately labeled and identified when disembarked. From their control center, Coast Guard officers monitor all vessels and investigate cases of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, in compliance with Italian laws and community regulations.
