To make their lives better, Laxmi's husband migrated four years.
With her husband abroad, Laxmi is responsible for their farm, livestock and young daughter.
? went through a tough time before and after the bay came. I suffered because of lack of food and proper care. Had my husband been at home, somehow he would have managed to have enough food for me."
Laxmi's husband took out a loan before leaving and most of the money he sends goes towards paying that debt. Four years later, their lives have not improved. It's still full of hardships, but now it's the added sorrow of Laxmi and her daughter missing their husband and father.
Laxmi is one of the 3,000 farmers being supported by FAO to better cope with the impacts of climate change and increase their food productions. She is learning climate-smart methods to cultivate crops and care for livestock. Under the project, she learns how to test different varieties of crops and uses different methods to determine the best crops to grow on their land. They are also learning how and when to feed their animals differently. ? am gaining more confidence through this project," she says.
? wish to make my daughter a more capable person so that she doesn't have to go abroad," she adds. Nepal is one of the countries hardest hit by the impacts of climate change. Farmers are the worst affected. Poverty and impacts of climate change are pushing people to migrate. As part of the FAO-supported project - Reducing vulnerability and increasing adaptive capacity to respond to impacts of climate change and variability for sustainable livelihoods in agriculture sector (2015-2019) - some 3,000 farmers learn to grow crops that are better adapted to the impacts of climate change, and practice climate-smart and sustainable agriculture. Farmers test different varieties of crops and use different techniques to determine the best crops to grow for their land. They learn by doing. They also get support to raise animals by learning what and when to feed their animals. The project is made possible thanks to the support of the Global Environment Facility.
