30 May 2022, Balkh, Afghanistan - An Afghan farmer, assisted by FAO, stands in the middle of his field as wheat crops reached harvest stage in Barmazid village of Balkh district.
Background information
Farmers in Balkh province are getting up to 1400 kg of wheat crops from 0.4 ha land, thanks to FAO's wheat cultivation assistance funded by EU Humanitarian Aid. The results of certified wheat seed are three times more than the local seed that farmers would have been forced to cultivate due to the distressing economic conditions, if they didn't receive the timely support from FAO.
450219 people have already been supported with wheat cultivation assistance packages in 2022. Each farmer received 50 kg of certified wheat seed and 50 kg of fertilizers, along with specific training on wheat cultivation.
In addition to providing food for their families, farmers supported with certified wheat seed, fertilizers and specific training will be able to keep some wheat for the next plantation season and may sell the surplus to cover other basic needs of their families.
