Project: IRQ/16/001/01/31/Repair and provide spare parts for Al Jazeera irrigation system-suspended canals and traveling irrigation through cash-for-work
4 December 2016, Rabiya District, Ninewa Governorate, Iraq - Local farmer Ahmed Saber Dawood Al Shimary, 55, walks through his dry backyard vegetable plot next to the main Al Jazeera irrigation canal where an FAO project is clearing the land of explosive devices left behind by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in 2014, and cleaning the canal to provide water for agriculture. The project is providing job opportunities and income for 500 families, and will enable 5,000 farmers, including Ahmed, to grow crops for trade and food through restoring water supply for agriculture. Once seasonal vegetable production, which relies on this water supply, recommences in northern Ninewa, up to 200,000 casual labourers will find work each vegetable season.
