The training of blacksmiths, at the Agricultural Institute of Engineering, Harare, grew out of an earlier FAO training course in repairing and making parts for farm tractors. Training in basic blacksmith techniques was urgently needed in rural communities. The course teaches participants how to get the maximum work out of the minimum number of tools, all of which are made by the blacksmith himself. Graduate of the extremely popular course instruct others in the rural areas. By setting up small blacksmithing workshops, they not only meet the needs of farmers but also provide spare parts required by the rest of the community. This in turn also creates a new income-producing activity.
