Rajasthan, India's chief sheep and wool state, has begun to revolutionize its industry with the aid of this United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) project. Research studies in sheep breeding, range and pasture management and pasture utilization and on production, processing and utilization of wools have already been completed. More than 150 demonstrations and training centers are teaching nomadic shepherds and other local people that better breeds, shearing and grading mean better wool that can be sold for higher prices. The project is being extended into eight other Indian states.
