An environmental study found that erosion had become a serious problem in Ecuador that threatened the sustainability of agriculture. A project of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with financial support from the Government of Switzerland, aims at disseminating appropriate practices that blend forestry, livestock and crop production without degrading the land. A national centre for agro-sylvo-pastoral training and watershed management has been rehabilitated and is targeted to teach, over a period of three years, 900 farmers, 180 extension workers and forest rangers and 45 agronomists and foresters, techniques in conservation-oriented upland farming, soil and water conservation and watershed management.
