The wife is a leader of a farming Production Team and her husband works in a small industrial factory. - - The Ma-Lu People's Commune is located some 28 kilometres northwest of Shanghai and, in common with other Communes, is divided into Production Brigades and Teams. Since its establishment in 1958 the Commune has made considerab1e progress in basic agricu1tura1 development and now has a tota1 membership of 7,500 fami1ies. Crops are mainly rice and cotton which are cultivated on some 2,260 ha. of land. Other activities include animal husbandry (44,000 pigs were raised in 1977), fish culture and small industries. The Ma-Lu People's Commune achieved food self-sufficiency in 1960 and since then increasing quantities of rice have been sold to the State (3,500 tonnes in 1977). Education, public health and cultural pursuits are also organized. The average income per head (children included) in 1977 was 201 Ch. Yuan ($118.24).
