Afghanistan, 1952 - Dr. Pierson fills pipette with serum which is transferred to bottles and stored in snow until ready for use. Each bottle contains a pre-determined amount.
For the last two years the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has led a vigorous campaign against rinderpest in Afghanistan. FAO expert Dr. Eric Pierson spent the Summer of 1951 inoculating cattle and manufacturing serum under the most primitive circumstances. The programme succeeded in stopping the potential epidemic.
