Andean Indians live in the high mountain region which runs from north to south through Ecuador. They are poor peasant people who. as proof of their ancestry, still speak Quà?hua - the language of the noble Incas. Today they live at a mere subsistence level; their lands are poor and their traditional laborious agricultural methods yield little when compared with the technical advances being made elsewhere in the world. The Andean Mission of the Ecuadorian Government has, among its various elements, the promotion of community development, rural education, health and sanitation projects, livestock production and the training of local leaders. The UN/FAO World Food Programme is assisting the Mission by providing high-protein foodstuffs at a total cost to WFP of over $700,000. The beneficiaries include volunteers engaged in road building and irrigation earthworks, pre-school children, pregnant or nursing mothers and students in training centres. The project, which is for 12 months, is likely to be extended for a further one-year period.
