Boys of the War Orphans Centre at Oued Aissi, some 80 km east of Algiers, eating their midday meal. This is one of 46 such centres being assisted by WFP. - - Education and Training of War Orphans. One of the sad consequences of Algeria's war of independence (1954-62) was the total of some 300,000 children who were orphaned; 30,000 of whom lost both parents. The Ministry of War Veterans has now assumed the responsibility of providing shelter, education and training for these children. Besides being a humanitarian task the project is also an investment in future economic and social development. The continuing need for the orphan centres can be seen from the fact that a child who was born and orphaned towards the end of the war will now be only 12 years old; and about 70% of the total at present under Government care are 16 years of age or younger. The UN/FAO World Food Programme is currently providing food which, together with local food provided by the Government, is used in the preparation of meals for some 6,000 war orphans residing in 46 orphan centres located throughout the country. The food commodities supplied by WFP include wheat flour, dried skim milk, vegetable oil, canned fish, pulses, sugar, cheese, canned fruit, jam and dried eggs. The total cost of the project to WFP is $1,681,900.
