Brushwood fences stabilize sand dunes at the 23rd kilometre of the "Way of Hope". - - Dune Fixation and Stabilization. FAO, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization is helping fight against desertification in Mauritania, especially where sand dunes encroach upon agricultural land. The project aims at assuring protection against dune encroachment in 15 locations, including a one-kilometre-long section at the 23rd km of the road "Way of Hope". The project involves staff training; encouraging awareness among rural people of desertification; and study programmes. The FAO project is financed by the Mauritanian Government with assistance from Algeria, WFP, UNSO/Danida, UNICEF and UNDP.
